Applications have been filed to develop a 99MW data center in California.
The proposed project site is located near the intersection of US Highway 395 and State Route 178 in Inyokern, an unincorporated area of Kern County, California.
The 238,000 sq ft (22,110 sqm) single-story data center would include an on-site substation. The site would feature six data halls and use both liquid and air cooling.
The first phase of the 99MW project would offer 60MW. Construction could start in April 2027 for a November 2028 launch date.
The 50-acre campus would be located between United States Route 395 (US 395) to the east and North Brown Road to the west. The project will include on-site canopy solar in the parking lot.
According to a filing with the California Energy Commission by R&L Capital, Inc., the RB Inyokern Data Center (RBIDC) would include 40 3MW diesel-fired generator sets that would be used to provide up to 99MW of backup emergency generation.
News of the project first surfaced in May 2026. A Change.org petition against the project has more than 1,140 signatures at the time of writing.
According to a dedicated project website, the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California, the Kern, Inyo, & Mono Counties Building and Construction Trades Council, and the Kern Economic Development Corporation have formally endorsed the project.
The Eastern Kern County Resource Conservation District submitted a letter of opposition to the California Energy Commission, as have the city of Ridgecrest, the China Lake Naval Base, and the Sierra Sands Unified School District.
The Indian Wells Valley Airport, also known as Inyokern Airport, has requested an aviation impact analysis of the proposed project.
