Data center planned for Rhondda Cyon Taf, Wales

Consultation is underway on plans for a data center in Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT), Wales.

The two-story facility would be built on a vacant plot of land east of the A4119 at Mwyndy Cross, near the M4 motorway outside the village of Miskin.

An application, from developer Maska Group, was filed with local authority RCT Borough Council last month. Consultation runs until Monday, July 13.

The proposal would see a single data center building constructed, measuring 18,220 sqm (196,140 sq ft) of space over two floors. A three-story office block would also be built, along with what is described as a “servicing/energy plant” and chillers.

Proposed IT capacity of the data center, and how it will be powered, have not been detailed.

Maska Group, which has offices in London and Manchester, describes itself as a developer and asset manager. It does not appear to have built data centers before.

Though Rhondda itself is not home to a large data center cluster, several developments are in progress in South Wales, including a modular data center proposed for a steelworks in Newport, and a hyperscale campus set to be built at a former car factory in Bridgend.

South Wales has been designated an AI Growth Zone by the UK government, meaning it is an area where data center developments are encouraged.
